Mmmm... Fall.

I believe fall has officially arrived here in Shiksa-dom. The Furry Wonder and I have spent two glorious afternoons wrapped up in blankets on the floor taking naps while listening to the rain outside, and it is good. I'm actually waiting for the really cold weather to kick in, because that's when I hit my stride cooking-wise. It's hard for me to be creative in the summer, but oh! the soups and stews and casseroles and desserts I plan for winter! If only I could convince hubby that no-carb diets really cramp my style....

The Halloween displays are already taking over at the local department stores, I see. Last week we stopped at the Post Exchange to pick up a birthday card for my mother and make our traditional round of the computer section, and immediately upon entering the store we were assailed by bright orange towers full of costume bits and bite-sized candies. I know I'm a bit of a procrastinator in general, but I don't understand the logic of buying Halloween candy TWO MONTHS in advance- how can you avoid the temptation? And what if the candy gets icky? I'd hate to disappoint my munchkins by giving them stale candy. Perhaps we'll go the sticker route instead... No expiration date, and my dentist buddy won't scold me for aiding and abetting the side of evil in the cavity wars. Eureka!

I've been a bit of an insomniac the past two weeks, much to my chagrin. Anyone who knows me is well aware that I absolutely ADORE sleep. Give me my battered feather pillow and a stuffed animal to clutch and I'm a happy girl. It's 4 am right now, though, and if today continues the latest trend it will be 8 or 9 before I start running out of steam. Furry Wonder absolutely refuses to let me nap for more than an hour without him, so we'll probably be catching zzz's around his schedule sometime later this afternoon. (Side note: it is incredibly unpleasant to be woken from a sound sleep by feeling a gnawing on the poor, unsuspecting toes that have slipped out from under the safety of the blanket. Goofy kitty.)

Thank you to my friend Bill for solving the mystery of the computer speakers- I still have a complaint, however. My compy has horrible taste in music. My poor ears have to endure enough top 40 garbage while out and about that I really don't need to hear it at home. (Oh, Gwen- how I loved you in junior high, but how I absolutely LOATHE the "Bananas" song!) I'd love to put on some Brad Mehldau to drown it out, but since other people in the house are sleeping I'm trying to be quiet. *sigh* I need to invest in some good headphones, evidently.

Finally read Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale last week. I hadn't read any reviews of it, just saw the name mentioned here and there and decided to pick it up when I saw it at the library. There should be a warning label on the cover- "If George Orwell terrified you, prepare to be very afraid." Yikes. I devoured it in one sitting, but yikes. It took two Douglas Adams novels, some Jane Austen, and some good Chinese before my hackles finally went down. Forget Dean Koontz- this stuff is SCARY!

Scott's alarm has gone off twice now, so I'd better go drag him out of bed before he's late to work. I'm so helpful. ;)

"Autumn has always been my favorite season. The smells, the sights, the food, everything adds up to a coziness that's just unbelievable. I'm not a big fan of snow, but when I step outside and have to at least pull on a jacket, that's good weather.
Halloween is coming up soon. What a great holiday- a chance to dress up and have fun, carve up pumpkins and put candles in your windows so the neighborhood kids know you have goodies for them. I wasn't great at coming up with creative costume ideas, but I love seeing the brothers and sisters get all fixed up. I've missed the last two years with them, and I'll probably be gone this year as well. That's one of the bad things about growing up and carving out a life for yourself- sometimes you miss the really important times with your folks."

Yeah, stay away from that low carb $#!^; the extra meat is nice but your body needs carbohydrates for energy so you just end up starving yourself. I've got a really good beef stew recipe I got in the latest Wegmans' magazine if you'd like it. I'll be testing out a "Hunter-style Chicken" one tonight. Austin likes to help me cook, is that not awesome? :)

I totally agree; Fall is great. It's always been my favorite time of year too; there's the leaves changing, and the cool weather, and there aren't any flies to bug you when you go hacking. Plus, standing outdoors in the coolth and smelling winter on the wind is one of those things that has to be experienced to be believed.

Heh heh- when he was a lot younger Forrester used to be a toe biter, too, although he liked to rub up against your bare feet a few times first, to lull you into a false sense of security, before biting them and running away cat-laughing #grins#

I keep writing fall tributes. I love autumn, and baking season. I get so much energy when the weather chills, which (after this last-oh-let-it-be-last heatwave) should be upon me soon!

Perhaps you should get your speakers some bunny ears. Or you can do the MacGyver method and just twist a coathanger and wrap it in tin foil. Let's see if you can pick up NPR.
